Home Blog Memorials Beyond the Funeral Home: Death in an Age of Technology

digital memorialWhen a loved one passes away, friends and family gather at the funeral home to say their goodbyes and seek closure. As technology advances and becomes an ever-present part of our lives, it is becoming more and more apparent that the funeral home service and even the burial are just the first step in a long process of remembering and honoring the deceased. Whether the deceased was tech-savvy or not, online communities and services offer his or her loved ones the chance to stay connected and, hopefully, heal.

Social media is a big part of the story when it comes to technology affecting a community after someone's passing. Online friends are taking on the task of keeping the deceased's network alive by posting to their Facebook wall, sharing personal photos, and reminiscing about old times. It seems that an account can stay active indefinitely through the contributions of friends and family members, and can serve as a living and changing tribute.

With digital files like important documents and invaluable family photos and videos being stored in remote cloud services, virtual wills are also becoming commonplace. It's not a question of who takes ownership of the camera or the computer but rather the files that may or may not be on a local machine.

Perhaps the most far-fetched, yet not impossible idea that has been discussed is the idea of holography. Hologram technology offers a 3D likeness that can move and speak as if the person were really present. Though it is costly for the average person, and the technology has not progressed enough yet, it is possible that in the future individuals will record a personalized holograph message that can be delivered to their families after they pass away.
