Home Blog Body Farms: What You Should Know

body farmThe term “body farm” can imply some slightly unsettling things. But, a body farm really is not scary or unsettling at all. In truth, a body farm is simply a research facility where human decomposition is studied. This may not sound appealing or appetizing to some people, but the study of human decomposition is very important. It helps both scientists and law enforcement to develop methods for identifying human remains, and also to learn more about the person’s life and lifestyle.

Most body farms accept donated human remains. Depending on the policies of the body farm, this may or may not affect planning for a funeral. It is possible to finalize arrangements for a donation before death, or family members and loved ones can make arrangements after the fact.

There are 5 body farms you can work with in the United States. The most well-known of these is the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, which is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. There are two located in Texas, one at Texas State University in San Marcos, which is called the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, and another at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, which is called the Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility. The fourth is located at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina, and is called the Forensic Osteology Research Station. The fifth is located at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and is called the Complex for Forensic Anthropology Research.

Working with a body farm is a very interesting alternative when considering your options for a funeral and for the person’s remains. If you are interested, you should reach out to one of these body farms for more information.
